How about you try saying that again

Midnight City's only Miyun AnWei, a 16-year-old earthbender who doesn't know how to spend her time more productively when out of school. She's usually found catcalling with the other street kids, cozying up vendors for a bite to eat, or doing chores around her mom's store, AnWei Earth Wear & Wares (located in the Hui Cun district of earth kingdom immigrants and merchants). Their home is an apartment on top of the store.

Name // Korean: 미연 (Mi-Yun)
Chinese: 咪云 (Mi Yun) 安薇 (An Wei)
(Her name can be any language, and the characters are kind of a joke)

“Hey, what’s a bit of dust and a skinned knee when you get a show like that? I need to keep my joints nice and limber before they creak up. Besides, friends like you won’t think less of…

"You are such a brooder, and if no one else has told you they should. So it is stuck like that! Mom always said not to make funny faces, but then I guess some people are just born like that. Whoops, here’s my money," fished from within her waistband, she put down a bundle of large bills safe in a plastic wrap, thanks to her mother’s foresight, "The usual contacts, please."

With her business taken cared of, she had the luxury to be nosy again, “Say hey, Ogami, who are you sending to? You aren’t married, are you?”

[Title taken from that Tommy February song :U]

Classes at the Sung Academy were… bearable.

San Ming was a good student and had a decent shot at the University for when he finally graduated. But as of right now, when he could be devoting his time and energy towards the Revolution instead… His suspension from class was the best time of his life for working towards building momentum; and it wasn’t all wasted, he even got to the chance to chat with a sympathetic water-bender. It had been good.

But now that he was back, he had to face a few new realities, such as the fact that now his old “friends” and the people he usually spoke to in the morning were pointedly avoiding him. It hurt, slightly, but he shuffled aside that pain (Some sacrifices had to be made for the Revolution) and made it his mission to stand apart and away from the others.

From the benders who bullied him and he retaliated back against, and to the non-benders who were too cowardly to stand up and fight. (But he’d fight for them still, so they wouldn’t have to feel this way)

And that is how San Ming Joo found himself the morning he finally returned to class.

A few months into her first year of school, and Miyun was already missing her old life of errands and freedom. This school thing was really cutting into her fun time between chores. On the plus side, she actually met a few more benders now, although she found bending was the only thing they seemed to like to do. There were always going to be snoots, she probably should have seen it coming, but the fact that they were all benders…could they think of nothing else to do with their talents? Such bullies.

So of course she heard of the San Ming incident, where a lone guy decided to take on the bullies empty-handed. And she didn’t need two guesses to figure out the angry, brown-haired kid in front of the school was him. From what gossip had passed on, he wasn’t suspended just for throwing a few punches. Something to do with the Revolution, which had never seemed real enough for Miyun to worry until recently, when she caught some of her neighbors talking too. Miyun’s family was one nice, middle-class group of benders amongst the dozens of Triad members and elite. Just because she’d always stood up for her non-bending friends didn’t make them trust all benders in general.

Spurred on by the curiosity and characteristic lack of restraint, she skipped over to the cautious bubble around her dissident classmate. His set jaw and furrowed brow reminded her enough of the disapproving types she liked to bother, and her impish grin came easily.

"Hey there, frowny, it’s San Ming, right? Heard you were pretty heroic a few weeks ago." There was a sudden, wary silence around them as Miyun decided to become gossip herself. She wished she was wearing her usual outfit instead of just leggings under a skirt; you get underestimated in a skirt, "You don’t look like the type to lose. I bet you really gave it to them, and I wish I could’ve watched."

Wolf at the back gate, tiger at the front: Ah it’s a not-so-wonderful cat life (Miyun-yun and Ogami)

“I can’t believe it’s this late already.”

At first glance, Miyun gives an impression of anything but punctuality and obedience, two of the things her mother unfortunately values most. It was easy to agree to the daily list of chores without actually paying much attention on the specifics entailing how to carry them out; buy a thing here, drop a thing there, usually errands didn’t have a time limit. Usually.

Well of course I would wake up late on Saturday, the one day the post office closes early. And of course I would leave this for last.

Admittedly, Miyun hadn’t been sleeping well for the past few nights, where Hyle had caught a cough that acted as if walls didn’t exist. In between those sleepless hours were the snatches of nightmares, buried thoughts that didn’t warrant reliving. She wondered when she would stop searching for faces in the crowd.

As she popped down from a low roof onto the fire escape, the face of the street-side clock caught her eye: 15 minutes until closing, she would make it! Ladders and shortcuts solved every travel problem when Miyun needed space to run without scattering games of turle-duck-goose every block. Of course, I wouldn’t needed to have run at all if I had set off half an hour ago. When her mother wasn’t around, Miyun did the mental-scolding herself, not that it spared her any on the return. If she acknowledged her problems - automatically zoning out her mother, the yummy distractions - no need for guilt, right? Not that she ever felt any, at least, not in relation to chores.

At the last set of stairs of the fire escape, which Miyun was taking in running leaps, instead of dispersing her speed gradually, the self-proclaimed acrobat increased it. With the room too low for a full jump, she fell into a crouch at the last second and sprang into nothing.

“Aaaaand knockout! It’s another breathtaking landing, a daredevil stunt, and the crowd goes wild!” The cheer came too early; Miyun’s feet knocked into each other on the gravel-churned pavement, and she tumbled into a clumsy sprawl, conveniently stopped by a pair of familiar shoes.

Ear fluid still doing the swing, Miyun landed face-up and for a moment could only giggle out dust, “Oh, it’s you again, rice-man. How about that record-breaker.”

Too focussed on his own personal dilemma — Ogami failed to keep an eye out for the neighborhood menace that had cheerfully inserted herself into his life. Again. Thankfully this time it wasn’t at a shop, but rather in the “safety” of the streets. He paused and glanced down at the small earthbender now sprawled out in the dirt and the grit and he could do nothing but frown.

Sure, he and his siblings rough-housed and fell in the streets — but that was a different place that wasn’t necessarily covered in concrete, but rather, snow for most of the year. That presented a nice, cushioned fall that he was sure this turf didn’t seem to have.

“Record-breaker or back-breaker,” he greeted, frowning still. He definitely had ‘disapproving-adult’ down pat, as well as ‘silent-brooding-Firebender’ and ‘angry-looking-brooding-Firebender. Actually, there wasn’t much difference between the three expressions as he regarded Miyun with a critical eye. “You are also too old to be tumbling around in the dirt, Miyun. You should know better than that.”

((By the way: Wan wan > Mii mii. Why did we even argue about it haha))

((Miimiimiiiiiyunnnn >:< reblogging on proper blogs is apparently so difficult for tmblr))

“Hey, what’s a bit of dust and a skinned knee when you get a show like that? I need to keep my joints nice and limber before they creak up. Besides, friends like you won’t think less of me if I look a little less than presentable, right? And let’s face it, my hair wasn’t shampoo-commercial to begin with,” springing back up with unsteady legs, Miyun fished around in her pants pocket and produced a rather battered letter, “here it is! With ten minutes to spare too, I deserve a pat on the back for that. Be right back, need to mail something - actually, looks like you do too, or are those just oversized grocery lists you’re holding? Ten minutes, ten minutes!”

She gave the letter a shake to loosen up the crinkles, then brushed a cloud of grit off her clothes and hair. Used to this sort of abuse, her outfit was still virtually in one piece, although her one bun hung a little looser than usual. Combing the weeds and tangles out of the rest of her cropped hair with an careless hand, she used the other to try and drag her bear of a friend into action. As usual, he was too solid to be moved and her own hand wrapped around his thumb, “That is what you came here for, I’m guessing? Or do you usually bring your brooding self across half the town in front of the post office to give me that look of yours. Does that tire your face, or is it simply stuck like that?”

* A * My factory-worker firebender OC, Ogami, and my friend’s earthbender OC, Miyun, who is a bit of a neighborhood menace and the number one cause for potholes and cracked pavement on their block.

Ogami makes a convenient hiding place. Kind of. Maybe
